Addiction Recovery and Community Health (ARCH) team

The ARCH Team is a specialty consult service available to emergency department or admitted patients at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The team works with individuals who are experiencing alcohol and other drug problems. Things like poverty, unstable or unsafe housing and a lack of photo identification and medication coverage are other issues of concern for our patients.

The ARCH Team is multidisciplinary and consists of the following team members:

  • Doctors with expertise in addiction medicine

  • Nurse Practitioners

  • Social Workers

  • Addiction Counsellors

  • Peer Support Workers

  • Pharmacist

  • Clinical Nurse Specialist

The ARCH Team provides integrated substance use management, health promotion interventions and social supports to patients admitted to the Royal Alexandra Hospital or those seen in our emergency department. The ARCH Team supports patients by offering them client-centred services that meet their personalized needs. The spectrum of wrap-around services includes:

  • Substance use stabilization including opioid agonist treatment

  • Social stabilization including housing referrals, income supports and an integrated identification program

  • Health promotion services including immunizations and screening for sexually transmitted or blood borne infections

  • Harm reduction services including a supervised consumption service (for hospital inpatients only) and a managed alcohol program

  • Connection to health care and social supports in the community

Members of the ARCH Team are trauma and evidence-informed, trained in motivational interviewing, and take a harm-reduction approach to care. In addition, our clinical team is connected with community partners able to support patients beyond their hospital stay.

The ARCH team has received Homeward Trust's ‘Recognizing Outstanding Organizations and People in Housing’ award, the ‘President’s Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievements in Innovation’ from Alberta Health Services, and the Health Quality Council of Alberta's 'Patient Experience Award' in recognition of their work.
