Education

ICHWP is committed to supporting healthcare professionals and students in learning best practices in harm reduction, addiction medicine, addressing the social determinants of health, and community-engaged research methods.

Our clinical and research team members are active teachers and mentors to a variety of healthcare professional students, graduate students, and research staff. In addition, the ICHWP's educational and quality improvement activities are supported by an in-house Clinical Nurse Specialist and an Evaluation Consultant.

Our educational activities include:

  • Presentations - Grand rounds, ICHWP symposia, clinical and research conferences, guest lectures, and ad hoc presentations to external organizations and key stakeholders
  • Internal knowledge translation - Engaging with individual hospital units and staff, providing input on AHS policies and procedures, developing standard protocols for substance-related intervention (e.g. alcohol withdrawal treatment, managed alcohol dispensation)
  • Quality improvement - Maintenance of a clinical information system, ongoing improvement cycles
  • Health care professional training - post graduate medical resident electives
